Case Study: Positive-Tolerance Extruded HDPE Sheets for a Korean Distributor
A Korean distributor contacted us to supply extruded HDPE sheets for resale in the South Korean market.
The customer had previously imported similar plastic sheets from China. Although the dimensions were within positive tolerance when the products first arrived, the length and width became smaller after the sheets had been stored for some time.
This resulted in several sheets falling below the required dimensions and created difficulties for the customer’s downstream sales and processing.
In addition to dimensional stability, the customer paid close attention to surface gloss, material hardness, product packaging, and the strength of the export pallets.
Customer Requirements and Project Expectations
The customer required all supplied HDPE sheets to maintain a positive tolerance in length, width, and thickness after the material had fully cooled and stabilized.
It was not sufficient for the sheets to meet the dimensional requirements immediately after production. The customer needed the final measurements to remain above the nominal dimensions after cooling and storage.
The surface gloss and hardness also needed to match the physical sample supplied by the customer.
Because previous shipments from another supplier had suffered pallet damage during transportation, the customer required stronger export packaging to protect the sheets during international delivery.
Client Detail Requirements
The client’s key requirements include:
- Positive tolerance in all dimensions
Length, width, and thickness needed to remain on the positive side of the agreed tolerance. - Dimensional stability after cooling
Measurements needed to be taken after the sheets were fully cooled and stabilized. - Measurement records for confirmation
Length, width, and thickness measurements for each specification needed to be photographed and provided to the customer. - Surface gloss matching
The finished surface needed to be adjusted according to the customer’s reference sample. - Hardness matching
Material parameters needed to be optimized to achieve the required hardness. - Stronger export pallets
The pallet structure needed to withstand international handling and transportation. - Protection against shipping damage
The packaging needed to prevent pallet failure from damaging the sheet edges or surfaces.
Customer Pain Points
1. Dimensions Became Smaller After Storage
The customer’s previous products initially measured within positive tolerance.
However, after the sheets had been stored for a period of time, the length and width decreased, causing some products to fall below the required dimensions.
2. Measurements Were Taken Too Early
If extrusion sheets are measured before they have fully cooled and stabilized, the dimensions recorded immediately after production may not represent their final condition.
The customer therefore needed measurements taken only after sufficient cooling.
3. Inconsistent Dimensional Compliance
The customer distributed the sheets in the Korean market and needed reliable specifications for downstream customers.
Undersized sheets could lead to processing problems, complaints, or rejection.
4. Previous Pallets Were Damaged During Transportation
The customer had previously experienced pallet damage after the goods arrived.
When the pallet structure failed, the sheets could shift, bend, scratch, or suffer damage along the edges.
5. Surface Gloss Did Not Fully Match the Market Requirement
The customer had a specific preference for the brightness and appearance of the sheet surface.
Standard production parameters could not be used without adjustment.
6. Material Hardness Required Further Optimization
The hardness of the sheet also needed to match the sample and the customer’s market expectations.
Several production adjustments were required before the final parameters were confirmed.
Our Positive-Tolerance HDPE Sheet Solution
To address the dimensional shrinkage problem, we increased the positive production allowance beyond the normal positive-tolerance range.
The sheets were allowed to cool and stabilize completely before final dimensional inspection. Length, width, and thickness were then measured for each product specification, and measurement photographs were provided to the customer for confirmation.
For the surface gloss and hardness, we used the customer’s sample as the comparison standard. The production parameters were adjusted three times until the finished sheets matched the customer’s confirmed requirements more closely.
We also redesigned the export pallet. Thicker plywood was used, and the number of bottom support members was increased from three to five to improve pallet strength and reduce the risk of transportation damage.

Why Our Extruded HDPE Sheets Were Recommended
• Positive Final Dimensional Tolerance
We did not rely only on measurements taken immediately after extrusion. Additional positive allowance was included to compensate for dimensional changes during cooling and stabilization.
• Inspection After Complete Cooling
Final measurements were taken only after the sheets had cooled sufficiently, providing a more reliable indication of the dimensions the customer would receive.
• Transparent Measurement Confirmation
Length, width, and thickness were measured for each specification. Photographs were sent to the customer to confirm the tolerance before shipment.
• Customized Surface Gloss
The production settings were adjusted according to the customer’s physical sample rather than supplying a standard surface without comparison.
• Customized Hardness Control
Material and processing parameters were refined to achieve a hardness level closer to the customer’s required sample.
• Three-Round Parameter Adjustment
The sheet formulation and production settings were adjusted three times before the final configuration was confirmed.
• Reinforced Export Pallets
Thicker plywood provided a stronger pallet platform for the heavy sheets.
• Five-Support Pallet Structure
Increasing the number of supports from three to five improved load distribution and reduced the risk of pallet deformation or failure.
